Q: How much does the program cost?
A: There is no fee for our peer support groups. We invite families to make a tax-deductible donation if they so choose. This is entirely voluntary. Donations are used to pay for facilitator training, food, art supplies, and pay rent and insurance.
Q: How long does it take to get started?
A: Our Support Groups begin in October and from that point, follow the school year calendar. , as space allows. Families may start anytime during the program year after they have attended an Orientation and at the PM’s discretion, based on all the factors that determine whether it is an appropriate time for the family to start.
Q: What happens at the “TreeHouse Orientation”?
A: This meeting does not take place during a regularly scheduled Family Night so that you can meet Facilitators, but not current participants. You will get to see the space and how we use it and ask any questions you might have. The purpose is to familiarize you with our program and our team with your family. We then discuss timing for starting the program. We encourage the adults to allow the child/teen to make the final decision about participation. This should be after the Orientation when the family can talk about it together.
Q: How long is a family expected to attend groups?
A: Continuity of attendance is important for a supportive environment of grief work; therefore, we expect regular attendance and a call if the family will be absent. The average time a family is in group is one program year, , but some families attend for two or three years.
Because everyone’s grief is unique, we encourage adults to allow their children/teens to choose when to start and when to stop attending. We do request that families announce their closing one meeting prior to their final group as saying goodbye is important.
Q: What if my child/teen needs private therapy?
A: We have a list of local therapists who specialize in grief counseling. Upon request we will provide the names of at least three therapists. We do not endorse any one therapist, but provide phone numbers so you can find the right fit for you or your child/teen.
Q: Can I drop my child off to Family Night?
A: No. An adult must accompany the child and must remain on site while the child is in group.
Q: Does Our TreeHouse have any religious affiliations?
A: We are nonsectarian and welcome all regardless of race, color, religion, sex, disability, gender, familial status or national origin.
