Q: How much does the program cost?
A: There is no fee for our peer support groups. We invite families to make a tax-deductible donation if they so choose. This is entirely voluntary. Donations are used to pay for facilitator training, food, art supplies, and pay rent and insurance.
Q: How long does it take to get started?
A: After the initial call to Our TreeHouse a family typically waits 2-4 weeks to attend their scheduled group, as space allows. Please note we only have program during the school year so families calling in late Spring could get delayed until Fall.
Q: What happens at the “TreeHouse Orientation”?
A: We schedule a time to meet each other. This meeting will not take place during a regularly scheduled Program Night. You will initially meet Facilitators, but not current participants. Questions are answered. A tour is given. The purpose is to familiarize you with our program and our team with your family. We then discuss timing for starting the program. We encourage the adults to allow the child/teen to make the final decision about participation. This should be after the orientation when the family can talk about it together.
Q: How long is a family expected to attend groups?
A: Continuity of attendance is important to build the peer group into a supportive environment for grief work; therefore, we expect regular attendance and a call if the family will be absent. The average time a family is in group is 12 months, but some come for more than a year.
Because everyone’s grief is unique, we encourage adults to allow their children/teens to choose when to start and when to stop attending. We do request that families announce their closing one meeting prior to their final group as saying goodbye is important.
Q: What if my child/teen needs private therapy?
A: We have a list of local therapists who specialize in grief counseling. Upon request we will provide the names of at least three therapists. We do not endorse any one therapist, but provide phone numbers so you can find the right fit for you or your child/teen.
Q: Can I drop my child off to Family Night?
A: No. An adult must accompany the child and must remain on site while the child is in group.
Q: Does Our TreeHouse have any religious affiliations?
A: We are nonsectarian and welcome all regardless of race, color, religion, sex, disability, gender, familial status or national origin.
